N surnames

Norris

Norris is an English surname with three possible origins and meanings:

  • the first is that it may derive from Old French norreis meaning “northerner”, such as someone from farther up north in England or from Scotland or Scandinavia, though it may also have been used to describe someone who may have been a Norseman, or a Viking;
  • It’s also a topographical surname for someone who lived at the north side of a settlement or village, made up from Middle English north (north) and hus (house);
  • Norris may also have originated as an occupational name for a wet nurse, derived from Old French norrice from Latin nutrix (wet nurse, nurse) which derives from a PIE root word.

Norris has also been used as a male given name though it could work for either gender.
